Food Served

SNACKS

A nutritious snack is provided both morning and afternoon.  Fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy are part of this rotating menu.  Food allergies are carefully considered.  Your child may choose to partake or decline.  The increase in children allergic to nuts and products containing nuts has prompted our staff to eliminate it in our snack and lunch menu.  However, this does not mean that we are a nut-free school.  Though discouraged, students may bring these items in lunches for personal consumption only.  Care will be taken to seat children with allergies apart from other allergy sensitive foods.

SPECIAL SNACK

A nutritious special snack may be provided by parents as desired.  Please inform your child’s teacher of the date that you would like to volunteer to bring a special snack, and please take into consideration the nut allergies of our students. Thank you.

BIRTHDAY SNACK

Children enjoy sharing their special day with classmates by bringing a birthday treat.  This snack is served after lunch and may be more festive than the other daily nutritious snacks.  Please inform your child’s teacher of the date and snack of choice for this special day.

LUNCH

Children may participate in the school hot lunch program.  Please review the monthly menu as there may be days when your child may not care for the daily meal.  A monthly lunch menu calendar is posted on the wall above the sign-in and out book.  Unfortunately, we are unable to send home the unconsumed portion of your child’s hot lunch.  If you have questions about these meals, please speak directly with your child’s teacher.

Children may bring their own lunch boxes to school.

  • When packing your child’s lunch box, please offer a variety of nutritious foods.

  • Food should be ready for consumption, i.e., peel hard boiled eggs and oranges, slice apples, cut sandwiches, etc.

  • Please pack two napkins, cloth or paper.

  • Provide necessary utensils.

  • Please pack food to be heated in microwave-safe dishes.

  • Use an ice pack when packing perishable food.

  • Metal thermoses work very well to keep cold food cold and hot food hot.

  • No candy or soda please.

All uneaten food will be sent home in the lunch box, so that you and your child may adjust portions and food choices accordingly.

Cooking and Food Preparation

Occasionally, the children will collectively work together to prepare a snack or meal.  The students will learn how to use kitchen utensils and measure ingredients.  The fun food preparation projects will teach our students how to cook safely while enticing them to try new and healthy foods.  A food project – “ingredients / utensils” sign-up will be posted on the classroom bulletin board in advance.
